How skin ages

When you are young your skin is constantly being moisturised from within by hyaluronic acid which When you are young your skin is constantly being moisturised from within by hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring sugar.

Hyaluronic acid absorbs moisture and keeps the skin hydrated which produces that youthful look we all like to have.

Over the years however, our skin loses hyaluronic acid therefore, the skin becomes dryer and loses volume which is why we get wrinkles and folds starting to appear.

Obviously there are other factors that contribute to the ageing process like smoking for example, the sun, pollution and of course gravity all of which helps pull the face down resulting in folds appearing.

Anti-wrinkle (Botox) Injection

Anti-wrinkle Injections are a non-surgical treatment that involves using a very fine needle to inject Botulinum Toxin into selected facial muscles. Botulinum Toxinis a highly purified natural protein that has the ability to relax muscles that cause wrinkles resulting in a smooth and more youthful appearance.

Botulinum Toxin is mainly used for dynamic wrinkles caused when we make facial expressions which, over a period of time leave their mark, crows feet and frown lines are a good example.

By injecting small quantities of Botulinum Toxin into facial muscles it causes the muscles to relax and you will being to notice a visible smoothing of your expression wrinkles in the proceeding 4 to 5 days.

The treatment only relaxes the muscles that have been treated so any untreated muscles still work as they would normally do.

The effects will generally last 3 to 6 months and after the effects have worn off the muscles return to normal. With regular treatments the wrinkles will appear less severe over time due to the muscles being relaxed and the overlying skin is rested and not creased.

Dermal Fillers

A dermal filler is an injectable solution that is placed in the soft tissue under the skin. This makes dermal fillers ideal for filling in creases and lines, plumping up the lips and cheeks, and enhancing facial contours. Dermal filler is directly injected into skin with the purpose of plumping that area to the point where the depression or fold has gone. Depending on the type of dermal filler the result can last from 6 months to 2 years.

Do not confuse dermal fillers with anti-wrinkle injections as they both do completely different things. Although both dermal fillers and anti wrinkle injections involve injections, anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscle and are used most often around the forehead, wrinkles around the eye (crows feet) and the frown line.

Dermal fillers on the other hand have the effect of plumping and smoothing the skin which is why people often have both anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers to produce a younger more youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are commonly used in the lips, frown lines, naso-labial folds (lines running from nose to mouth) marionette lines (lines running from mouth to chin) as well as crows feet. Dermal fillers vary in density which determines which area they can be used in and helps achieve the desired result you would like, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, creating symmetry, or enhance a particular feature such as your lips.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a great way to give your skin a spring clean lift and improve its condition without invading your day they are aptly described as the ‘lunch time peel.’

We use the Jan Mairni Skin Research Glycolic Peels, one of the best technological advances for skin care. The Glycolic acid reduces the build-up of cells at the lower levels of the skin and loosens the glue-like cellular cement that is present in skin that is ageing, causes acne, sun damage, skin discolouration or a coarse texture.

The facial procedure will resurface the skin giving dramatically softer, smoother texture, reducing the fine lines and wrinkles and reduced scarring. After just a few weeks, your skin will look brighter, clearer and for those of you who suffer with dry skin,, it will become hydrated and smooth. It’s a great treatment if you want to look your best for an event, holiday, or just feel more radiant.

The benefits of the peel is that there’s no ‘down time’ – make-up can be applied straight after and normal activities can carry on after treatment.

This treatment resurfaces and clarifies skin texture, minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and fades the appearance of discolouration to even skin tone.

The Glycolic and luminate resurfacing is an accelerated facial treatment and incorporates two effective topical exfoliants. The combination of glycolic acid and lightening agents progressively reduce the appearance of spots and discoloration whilst also exfoliating the skin and gently removing dull, dry skin for a more hydrated radiant glow.

The glycolic and enzyme resurfacing is an accelerated facial treatment that incorporate two effective topical exfoliates. The combination of glycolic acid and proteolytic enzymes safely intensifies the resurfacing action and provides measurable results for a virtually any skin type. This peel is especially good for those that suffer with congested skin, blackheads and redness.

This treatment resurfaces and provides skin refining effects for greater smoothness and hydration. This peel will assist with helping to minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne, sun damage and hyperpigmentation.

*Alpha Hydroxy Acid (Glycolic Peel) is derived from sugar cane and has the smallest molecular structure of the AHA family that can penetrate the skin more effectively than other Alpha Hydroxy Acids. It is not absorbed into the body and will not cause any systemic side effects like chemicals used in other peels.

Dermal Needling

Our newest treatment to the North Downs Aesthetics clinic, Dermal needling is showing amazing results for those who have suffered with scarring and acne on the face.

Dermal needling is a medical procedure which uses a series of microscopic needles which are controlled by an electronic pen to provide thousands of precision channels into the dermal layer of the skin. These needles cause multiple, tiny micro puntures in the dermis which stimulates growth factors in the skin and the post traumatic response stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin. This renewed production plumps up the skin, stretches it and refreshes it too.

Dermal needling pushes anti-oxidants serums, vitamins, hyaluronic acid and other active ingredients into the skin. The serums used will be tailored to the skin condition or skin goal that you have.

Results continue to be seen long-term as the collagen goes through the renewal process.
This treatment is non-invasive and is ideal for dull or ageing skin, uneven skin tone, scarring, acne, enlarges pores and stretch marks. It can be used on the neck and décolletage areas as well as other problem areas of the body.

Prior to having dermal needling your skin will be cleansed and a numbing agent applied to ensure that you remain comfortable throughout the treatment. Treatments take 60-90 minutes.

Most people will see the results approximately 3 weeks after the first treatment however individual results will vary depending on individual skin health. With scaring and stretch marks the results are generally permanent.

Disclaimer: Please be aware that results may vary from patient to patient taking into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle and medical history. Multiple treatments are often required which will be discussed during your consultation.

Lip Enhancements

As lips age they naturally become thinner and lose some of their definition which can happen particularly around the V shape, often called the cupids bow. In some cases this can be hidden with makeup however, the makeup can often “run” into the vertical lines around the lips exacerbating the problem rather than hiding it. With lip fillers such as Juverderm, you will receive a treatment that will naturally give you back your “youthful plump” lips.

Women and men of all ages with naturally thin lips can also benefit from lip enhancers to give them the fuller lips they have always wanted.

Areas that can benefit from treatment include the vermilion boarder or the lip outline resulting in more definition and width.

Targeting the fleshy parts of the bottom and top lips can increase the volume giving fullness and pout. By adding filler to the cupids gives it definition and contouring.

Before any treatment a full consultation takes place with a registered aesthetics nurse who is qualified to prescribe the treatments.

Anti-wrinkles injections usually take 5 to 10 minutes to administer, fillers take between 10 to 20 minutes depending on the area or areas being treated.
